Introduction
The Pas de l'Aiguille national necropolis is a place of remembrance for the Resistance in the Vercors massif.
On July 22 1944, at Pas de l'Aiguille, 23 maquisards were trapped in a cave under enemy fire. They resisted the assault for over 30 hours. In the middle of the night, they tried to escape down the slope. 7 of their comrades died up there, as did the local shepherd, while three of them, seriously wounded, chose to end their lives inside the cave. A national necropolis - the smallest in France - stands in their memory in the verdant Chaumailloux valley, next to the cave where they died.
